Episcopal Dioceses - Research Starter: Home

A guide for students in Southwest's course H2220

Introduction

This libguide is in development and aims to support students in the Seminary of the Southwest course H2220. Pages are added at the request of H2220 enrolled students. If you have a resource to suggest, please reach out to the Harrison Library by email at library@ssw.edu.

Diocesan Journals

Please see the various tabs on this guide for resources on particular Episcopal dioceses. Don't see the diocese you are looking for? Please reach out to the librarians at library@ssw.edu to request a research starter page be developed.

Historically, the Harrison Library at Seminary of the Southwest has collected diocesan journals in print from The Episcopal Church Province VII.

For those researching Episcopal dioceses in other provinces, we employ a variety of research strategies. We recommend that Southwest students contact the Harrison librarians as soon as possible so we can create a research plan to meet your needs. The research plan will always include visiting the website of the Episcopal diocese of your choice to see what resources are already available, so that is a great first step!

You might also try searching for diocesan journals in databases such as HathiTrust, Internet Archive, and Google Books. Since older journals will be in the public domain, you might just find what you need already digitized and freely available.

Finding a Diocese

The Episcopal Church website has an online tool for finding Episcopal dioceses.

Episcopal Church Annual

The Episcopal Church Annual, often referred to as "the Red Book," is a useful periodical for researchers. The Harrison Library has almost a full run of this series in print. (We gladly accept donations of missing volumes!)

This periodical is shelved in the West Room on level B1 at call number ZP Ep46 A. The Red Books do not circulate and must be used in-house.

Read more about this resource and what it includes on the Church Publishing website.

Episcopal Clerical Directory

Researching an Episcopal priest, deacon, or bishop? The Episcopal Clerical Directory is on our shelves ready to be consulted. The Harrison Library has almost a full run of this resource that is published every other year. (We gladly accept donations of missing volumes!) Like many other periodicals that have been around a while, it has gone through several name changes over the years.

This resource is shelved in the West Room on level B1 at call number ZP Ep46 D. They do not circulate and must be used in-house.

The Archives of the Episcopal Church

The Archives of the Episcopal Church is always adding material to their Digital Archives which are searchable online:

www.episcopalarchives.org/

The Harrison Librarians always recommend getting in touch with us before contacting the Archives for the simple reason that we may be able to provide you with the resource you are seeking. Researchers need to book visits to the Archives in advance, and the deadlines for this class assignment may not allow the opportunity to wait for a research appointment at the Archives. But we do recommend 1) taking full advantage of the Archive's Digital Archives whenever you are conducting research about the Episcopal Church and 2) contacting the Harrison librarians if you feel like your research is leading you to the Archives and we will gladly guide you.
